The Key take-aways from the Expat Fair in New York
Last week I was lucky enough to attend the ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR by HEIMAT abroad in New York. This event was an excellent opportunity for me to meet with all the great people I was only connected digitally before. ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR targets Germans living in New York, creating a space to interact and learn. Next to German food and exciting booths, there have been very insightful workshops and discussions about finding a job abroad and fitting into a foreign culture. In this blog post, I want to give you a short summary of my most significant learnings from the workshops.
Who is behind the Ich-Bin-Expat-Fair
The ICH BIN EXPAT FAIR presented by HEIMAT abroad is the second annual networking event for the entire German, Austrian, and Swiss community in NYC and the businesses and organizations who serve them. The fair itself is a great mix of meeting new people, getting informed about useful products & services abroad, and learning useful tips & trick from the experts of the expat industry. The event is planned and executed by the founder of HEIMAT abroad Gabi Hegan and her great team. Workshop #2: Multicultural leaders - multicultural employees: Navigating the labyrinth of the unfamiliar
This workshop was all about working in an intercultural context with all its beauty and challenges. Managers working abroad are facing new obstacles and understanding the differences is the first vital step to react. Dr. Beatrice Kraemer, founder and president of Organisation At Their Best, a New York City based consulting and coaching firm, introduced visitors to different cultural concepts to become aware of the origin of communication conflicts. Examples have been the “Hofstede’s four dimensions” of cultural theory or the “Six Dimension of Culture” by Kluckholn and Stroedtbecks. Generally speaking, people don’t like change. However, there is no use in comparing a culture you have experiences for all your life with something new you just got introduced to. Stepping back from our own cultures can be very hard but also very rewarding. A very profound quote by Drucker says it all: “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” As a consequence, modern leaders have to be much more empathic. Train yourself in reducing your cultural baggage of stereotypes you are carrying along with you and start to develop a curiosity for something that is new and unknown.
Workshop #3: Three proven Steps to turn your business into real revenue
The amazing Amel Derragui from Tandem Nomads showed us how to set the foundation for a successful business and grow it to an actual revenue stream. If you don’t know her work already, you definitely have to check it out! She is providing amazing resources for people who want to start their own business during their time abroad. Her podcast features very inspiring women all around the globe who thrive in their own business.
You can find all the information about the workshop in a free download on her website. Here I just want to give you a short overview of the three proven steps to turn your business into real revenue:
Step 1: Clarity
Think about what problem you are solving! Who do you help with your product/service? What problem do you solve? Why is this a problem in the first place?
Step 2: Consistency
Where do you find your customers? What are the channels that are perfect for communication and how often should you communicate? How do you create free content that will grow your business?
Step 3: Conversion
Amel introduced us to the YOU-ME-US formula. The secret is to present yourself and the value you are offering before asking someone to become a client. Learn more about this important point on her website or in her podcasts!
