Most mothers struggle with juggling the different roles in their life. How to enjoy work while also caring for children? How to deal with public opinions about being a good mother? How to encounter colleagues at work who diminish your level of commitment? Many academic papers are researching the manifold challenges of motherhood. Today, I want to introduce you to the concept of intensive mothering and its effect on the working mothers’ experiences focusing on the paper by Lamar and Forbes (published April 2020) called “A phenomenological investigation into the role of intensive mothering in working mothers’ career experiences.”
News podcasts: Best podcasts to stay in touch with global developments
Best Podcasts to stay in touch with global developments
Living abroad has the considerable advantage of getting closer to a foreign economy and political landscape. However, it also might disconnect you a bit from your home turf. A while ago I discovered news podcasts to be the perfect medium for me to stay up to day with developments around the globe. Listening to the news while doing other things is not only convenient, but I also realized that I am much better informed about topics I would not buy a book or magazine about.
Here are my personal Top 5 news podcasts I follow on an almost daily basis. Some of them are more for a long drive on the weekend while others are just taking a couple of minutes – informing me about the top news before I had my first coffee of the day.
As a German living in the US, I am bit influenced by news media of these two countries. So I would love to know your favorite kind of podcast and why you like to listen to it. Please share your favorite podcasts in the comment section below and let me know if you like one of my favorites.
My top 5 news & politics podcasts
News podcast #1: The daily (US)
I honestly don’t know how they do it – but every morning they offer a more than up-to-date episode with excellent research and a neutral perspective (although you can hear that they are definitely democratic in times of Trump). I highly recommend this podcast to get some context on US topics.
NEWS PODCAST #2:The Financial Times (UK)
I swear I am not just listening to this podcast because I am missing the British accent 🙂 Although this is a definitive plus! It’s way shorter than the Daily and focuses more on Europe and India. Especially India is very interesting for me as German newspapers do not really cover this area.

NEWS PODCAST #3: Deutschlandfunk (Germany)
This podcast is only available in German and my go-to-source to stay in touch with local news. It was a gamechanger when I discovered this podcast at a time where the German political landscape was in turmoil, and I was starting to lose my connection to it. The Deutschlandfunk podcast has a great mix of topics and perfect interview partner!
NEWS PODCAST #4: Handelsblatt (Germany)
Another German podcast I love listening to as it is very short and covers not only the economic landscape of Germany but also the effects of Asia and US trade on Europe. Handelsblatt is my go-to podcast for my first coffee in the morning. I also love the mix of information with some philosophical views.
NEWS PODCAST #5: Goldman Sachs (United States)
I was never really interested in the finance industry but the moment I listened to one of these episodes I was amazed by the tone and the positive company culture Goldman Sachs seems to have. They do many in-house interviews with their experts for the respective markets, and I especially loved the recent episode about Germany and its current developments. Never have I heard a more comprehensive yet neutral summary of the current situation of Germany!
So I am curious, what type of news podcasts are you listening to? This medium is booming at the moment, and I love to see how I am way more informed than before – just because I can listen to them on my way to work or doing things at home. I especially liked listening to many episodes on our recent road-trip. Let me know if you are interested in my top 5 lifestyle podcasts.

Becoming a mother most likely creates a shift in your perspectives and your priorities in life. Like with any other major life change it offers the possibility to reflect on the path behind and provokes the question of What next? While mother AND father are facing a new era, it is especially challenging for the one who pauses a career and becomes the major caregiver. In this blog post, I reflect on the different family models and how to decide what’s best for you.
5 weeks in our very own repatriation journey I want to take the chance and reflect. How does it feel to move back to your home country? How does someone adjust to a culture that is familiar but distant at the same time? Oh, and yes, let’s not forget that we are all trying to create a new normal in times of Covid19.
Covid19 is affecting all layers of our daily lives obviously not sparring out employment. As this website focuses on the professional journey of expat partners, I want to address the questions you might have right now:
Does it still make sense to apply for jobs?
Are there even job listings?
What can I do to increase my chances of becoming employed?
2020 had a rough start in terms of global news. The outbreak of the coronavirus was one of them. The sheer amount of media coverage (on all levels of quality) and the uncertainty that the virus outbreak brought to many lives also affected expat families around the globe but specifically those closer to the area of origin. I was wondering, how expat families are coping with the challenge, how they made their decision on whether to stay or to go “home”, and what they have learned from the current situation.
Moving to a new city can definitely be a challenging process, especially if you do not know anyone there. Whether due to a new job, apartment, or relationship, the process of networking with a totally new crowd can be intimidating – even if you’re already outgoing. And that is after you have adjusted to the new location.
